Analisis Novel "Tempest"

The year is 2009.  Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Ø  Characters and Characterization

o   Protagonist

1.      Jackson Meyer

He is the main character in this novel. He has a good nature. Jackson is also an intelligent, compassionate, brave, romantic, loyal and  responsible person.

a.       Intelligent             : “I have some ideas that can help you. we can use the disguises                  code to trick Marshall.”

b.      Compassionate     : I'll never let Holly hurt again. I will not repeated that incident                               on 29 October 2007. I swear that no one will hurt her again. I                                will keep holly save.

c.       Brave                    : I point a gun to her feet, but the distance is too close to dad                                  and I do not want to take the risk. the adrenaline flowing in my                              body and I rolled out under the table, stand up, and then my                                       feet on her back and pointing a gun to his head.

d.      Romantic              : I grinned and kissed her before standing. "I would move                                wherever you want."

e.       Loyal                    : “I told courtney that I will marry Holly, and will not go away                         from him.”

f.       Responsible          : “My farther from her, the more painful it feels. and I know                             without a doubt, that finally I have done the right thing.Without                             remorse. all of this I did, to keep Holly save and happy.”

2.      Adam Silverman

Adam is a friend of Jackson. He knows all the secrets of jackson. Even he also helped in solving the problem of Jackson. Adam is a very skilled person in computer science and he is very loyal to jackson.

a.       Smart                    : “Sorry, I borrowed two other computers from your house to                           formulate your recent data, the hard drive is not big enough                                     and could not open the memory card that you gave me, so I sort                               assembles my own computer. I would also hacking the                                       Marshall's agent computers.”

b.      Loyal                    : “I trust you. I'll help you solve this problem.”

3.      Holly Flynn

Holly is Jackson's girlfriend. She is a woman who is very loved by jackson.

Holly has a long and blonde hair. She is a very romantic, caring and funny person.

a.       Romantic              : “You always hold my hand at the right moment and kiss me in                              the most perfect moment. As it is the way you express what                                               can’t you say”

b.      Care                      : “I bring your lunch. eat it”

c.      Funny                   : “I can’t believe you can persuade people to fix this place.”                              Jokes holly

4.     Dad (Kevin Meyer)

Kevin Meyer is the father of Jackson. Actually he is the adoptive father of Jackson. He adopted Jackson when he was eleven months. Kevin was very brave, wise person, the loving father and he kept many secrets from Jackson.

a.       Brave                    : The last thing I saw, dad was pull adam and lie flat when a                             bullet passed slip over her head

b.      Compassionate     : Dad being paranoid about his child safety then he hire a                                  former CIA agent to follow his son who injured.

c.      Mysterious           : Dad is a CEO, proficient in martial arts, and it turns out dad                                  was working for the CIA and the work he is doing every day                                  just a guise. Dad worked as an spy in the CIA.

5.     Dr. Melvin

Dr. Melvin is a doctor who specializes in treating people who have the ability to travel through time like Jackson. Dr. Melvin is very useful because from Dr. Melvin, Jackson began to know his origin and other confidential that his dad hide.

a.       “You have a rare gene. we call it a tempus gene which has been known to cause symptoms or certain capabilities”

6.     Courtney Meyer

Courtney is twin sister of Jackson. She is a cheerful girl. But when she was 14 years old, she had cancer and died.

a.       “My twin fall in love .. I never expected to hear it.” She muttered while smiling.

7.      Jenni Stewart

Jennie Stewart is dad's secretary. She is a CIA agent who has the same divisions namely Tempus like dad. Jennie was a smart and a person with less care about something.

a.       Smart                    : “You know, the apartment manager in Spain told me that you                               just disappeared a few days ago, without bring a single stuff.                                  He thinks you're dead. So is your Dad. He was very worried.                                  Until you call from the police station

b.      Less care              : “Is up to believe it or not, I don’t care. I had never been there                                and now here. Like a magic.”

8.     Chief Marshall

Chief Marshall is chairman from CIA agents. He  tried to guide his subordinates (Kevin Meyer) to save Jackson from the enemy. He is a man who is not afraid of anything.

a.       “And you're also not  a special agent that very well-trained  for the CIA!” Snapped marshall.

9.      Freeman

Freeman is the agent who served as a Dad’s (kevin meyer)  assistant and as a Dad’s mentor.

10.  Toby

Toby is one of the jackson's friends  in which he worked. He is a flirtatious person.

a.     “You must be kidding Fslynn. I think  you are the last woman that will be fascinated by me.”

         

11.  Jana

Jana is Jackson’s friends and  toby’s cousins.

12.  Mike

Mike is the boss of the gym.

13.  David

David is an ex boyfriend of Holly.

14.  Emily

Emily is a girl aged 11 years who came from the future. She came to in 2009 to commemorate Jackson.

15.  Edward

Edwar is a doctor who saved Jackson when  his arm broke.

16.  Cal

Cal is Jackson’s driver.

17.  Katherine Flynn        

Katherin is Holly’s mom. She is a very panic person.

a.     “mom could say panic, even if there is a guy that talks to me.”

18.  Karen

Karen is an artisan teller at a souvenir shop and she is Jackson’s high school friend.

19.  Lydia

Lydia is Holly’s roomate.

20.  Miss. Ramsey

She is jackson’s favorite Spanish language teacher at the high school.

21.  Mr. Wellborn

Mr. Wellborn is a boss of camp children.

o   Antagonist

1.      Thomas

Thomas is the main enemy of Jackson. he is chairman of the EOT (Enemey of Time). Thomas always instigate Jackson to join him with the words to convince Jackson that he is not the enemy.

a.       “I come here not to hurt you, Jackson. it was not our intention. we will gladly to release your father if he did not kill so many of our parties”

2.     Raymond

Raymond is a man who served as an accomplice of Thomas. He has red hair, burly and a person who don't give up easily.

a.       I turned just in time to see the hand of Raymond infiltrate into half-buttoned on his jacket. His hand out, tightly gripping semi-automatic the gun. He aimed it right my head using his eyes that still healthy, but his view was blocked by a blood droplet.

3.      Cassidy

Cassidy is one member of EOT (Enemy of Time) as well the biological mother of Jackson and Courtney. Dr.Melvin succeeded in stealing her ovum of Cassidy.

4.      Rena

One of the members who helped Raymond when attack Jackson.

5.     Dr.Ludwig

He is a scientist that have the same interests like Dr.Melvin namely a time traveler. Dr. Ludwig is doctor who worked for Thomas.

6.      Harold

One member of the EOT (Enemy of Time) who was killed on Sunday October 14th 2007.

Ø  Point of View

In this story, the author uses First Person Point of View. In the 1^st person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters within the story. The character uses the pronouns I and we.

a.    I'm not sure if she heard me enter, but then i think, maybe the shoe was intended for me. Not for the first time a girl threw a shoe at me, but for Holly, was somewhat inconsistent with her character.

b.    Thomas was masterful. We arrived at the place we had left off.

Ø  Plot

Tempest uses the plot forward and backward. It’s look from Jackson's capability that can travel through time.

a.       Exposition

Jackson is a 19-year-old teenager. He is the one who have the ability that can travel through time. He knows his ability since a year ago when he unintentionally slept in the class and jump to the past. Since then, Jackson often test his ability to perform small jumps of no more than six hours.

b.      Rising Action

Jackson when being alone in a dorm room holly (jackson girlfriend), suddenly came

two strangers who want to catch jackson.

c.       Climax

Without a lot of reasons the two men immediately attacked Jackson and Holly because Jackson refused their invitation. Because of panic, Jackson couldn't control himself. Unconsciously he jumped to 2007 and left Holly who was shot by a stranger.

Jackson was thrown into the past. He was stuck in 2007. It has perform of leaps he did that day, but he couldn't go back to 2009. Jackson was worried about Holly,  at the same time he trying to find out, what it's trying covered by his Dad (Kevin Meyer) with the other secret agents. Then, Jackson was looking for the cause and what should he do in order to survive Holly. And at that time many enemies come to convince Jackson that people in Tempest was wrong about Tempus.

d.      Falling Action

The secret that guarded by dad, started jackson know. And because of it, he can save Holly. Jackson repeatedly make the leaps into the past to make it able to find himself that she is not the biological child of his Dad and he a kind of child who became an experiment done by Dr. Melvin. And the enemys was still not managed to persuade Jackson to join them.

e.       Resolution

The enemies not get Jackson, and all the secrets have been knew. Now is the time to Jackson decide to what he should do for his girlfriend. He realized that by saving Holly, he must go away from her by backwards 2 months. The month before they knew each other. Jackson did it because the enemy knows that if he stay away from Holly, she would never hurt again. And Jackson promised to not  use his ability in order that events never happen again  which he didn't want and jackson never regret it.

Ø  Theme

The theme of this novel is about “love”. Jackson willing to die in order to save his girlfriend, Holly. His love to Holly are very strong that he was willing to go back to the past to save Holly and find out the truth about him.

a.    I'll never let Holly hurt again. I will not repeated that incident on 29 October 2007.

I swear that no one will hurt her again. I will keep holly save.

Ø  Symbolism

In this novel there is a symbol that is “Axelle”. Axelle is a project that designed to use a combination of the genes Tempus by Dr.Melvin's research and development of future technologies that we obtain from various sources. The real implementation of Axelle began in 1989, after Dr.Melvin had found that the fertilized ovum into the womb of a surrogate mother.
